A Brief Guide To Balm, Florida

Situated in the southern part of Hillsborough CountyBalm is a small town that is in close proximity to Orlando and Tampa. This unincorporated census designated place is around 19 kilometers (12 miles) south of the eastern Tampa outskirts – both locations are connected by the US Route 301. To the south, the town is bordered by Wimauma, to the southwest Sun City Center, to the west Apollo beach and Riverview to the north.

Originally established as a flag stop by the Seaboard Air Line Railway, the area was initially referred to as Doric, after the establishment of a post office back in 1902. This name was later changed to Balm due to the area’s “balmy” air. As a flag stop, Balm became a focal point that attracted settlers from all over, quickly turning it into a community – made up of a general store, teacher, sawmills and blacksmith. The arrival of electricity back in 1937, and a public telephone soon after, further transformed the town, attracting more settlers.

From around a thousand people back in the mid forties, Balm’s population has grown to just over five thousand. The town’s population growth has been around 194 percent, since 2020. Balm’s racial composition is mainly made up of Whites, Blacks and Hispanics – with other races making up a small part of the total population.
